Original Album

Boston is the debut studio album by American rock band Boston released in August 1976. The album was certified gold two months after its release and certified platinum for the first time in November 1976, becoming one of the fastest selling debut albums in rock history. The album cover art was created by award-winning graphic designer, Paula Scher who was Art Director at CBS Records in 1976. Band founder, guitarist Tom Scholz, wanted the cover to be tech-like, as he was an MIT grad and product engineer at Polaroid [1]. At his suggestion of “guitar spaceships”, Scher morphed upside-down guitars into a fleet of alien-style spacecrafts emitting fiery blue flames out of the sound holes and the guitar necks serving as the craft’s tail section. The intended imagery is of the earth exploding while the spaceships are escaping into orbit [2].

Ross’s Take: “I remember painting with my dad in the summer listening to KFOX when I first heard Boston. I’d discovered weed recently. The whole album was kickass, and the cover art was killer.”
